Vertigo & balance disorders
Vertigo is the sensation of moving or spinning. It can be caused by a variety of conditions affecting the inner ear, brainstem, cerebellum or vestibular nerve. Treatment depends on identifying and eliminating the underlying cause. In some cases, vestibular rehabilitation therapy—exercises designed to teach the brain to adapt to vertigo—can help.
Fluid / recurrent infections and ear tubes
When the Eustachian tube to the ear is blocked, repeated infections in the space behind the eardrum can occur. The Eustachian tube is the passage from the back of the nose to the space behind the eardrum. Treatment of chronic ear infections may require medication and surgery.
Pediatric Ear Infections and Ear Tubes
About 75 percent of children experience an ear infection by the time they reach three years of age. Inflammation of the ear canal, often called swimmer’s ear, and inflammation of the middle ear due to bacterial or viral infections can cause acute pain and partial deafness. A thorough examination is necessary to diagnose ear infections, usually followed by a course of antibiotics and, in some cases, Ear Tubes.
Placing tubes in the ears drains the fluid and ventilates the middle ear. Tubes may keep ear infections from recurring while the tubes are in place.
Hearing Loss and Ringing in ears (Tinnitus)
An estimated 25 million Americans suffer from tinnitus, which is characterized by ongoing ringing, buzzing, hissing or other noise in the ear. This condition can become so severe that it interferes with daily activities.
Special hearing aids that emit noise at barely audible levels have proven helpful to many tinnitus patients, along with sound therapy to help retrain the brain.
Eardrum perforations
A hole or rupture in the eardrum, a thin membrane that separates the ear canal and the middle ear, is called a perforated eardrum. The medical term for eardrum is tympanic membrane. Pain, decreased hearing, and sometimes a liquid discharge often accompany a perforated eardrum. The causes of an eardrum hole are usually from injury, infection, or chronic Eustachian tube disorders.
Earwax
Earwax or Cerumen is healthy in normal amounts and serves as a self-cleaning agent with protective, lubricating, and antibacterial properties. Under ideal circumstances, the ear canals should never have to be cleaned. However, that isn’t always the case. Sometimes earwax accumulates to cause symptoms such as hearing loss, infection, Tinnitus (ringing) or other issues.
